Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis began the daily press briefing on Monday by referring to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ visit to Ankara, which returns a visit paid by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Athens last December and is the fourth meeting between the two leaders in recent months.

“The aim of the visit is to keep channels of communication open at the highest level, so that relations can progress to the next step and so that the two leaders can review the progress in bilateral relations and in the areas of cooperation that have been agreed,” Marinakis said, reminding reporters that the Greece-Turkiye High Level Cooperation Council held in Athens last December had culminated in the adoption of the Athens Declaration and the signature of 15 bilateral agreements and memorandums.

He said the meetings between Mitsotakis and Erdogan on Monday will discuss bilateral, regional and international issues and also schedule the next meetings for conducting political dialogue on the positive agenda and confidence building measures.

“Greece is currently stronger than ever – geopolitically, defensively and diplomatically – and with an economy that is much stronger and resilient in periods of repeated crises. Our country strives to maintain an atmosphere of dialogue with the neighbouring country. Greek positions are always stated clearly by the prime minister and our country becomes stronger in practice,” Marinakis said.

He also stressed that the government, without the least inclination for concessions as regards the country’s sovereign rights, “believes that dialogue can only act positively for the two countries,” adding that this position has been vindicated by the results in the handling migration in Evros and the Eastern Aegean, the virtual elimination of violations and the benefits for residents of 10 Greek islands from the new fast-track visa for visitors from Turkiye.

The spokesperson also referred to various domestic issues, such as the delivery of postal votes, saying that more than 50,000 (roughly one in four) voters who registered on the relevant platform have already received them. He noted that these must be sent back by 17:00 on Saturday, June 8.

He also announced the launch of the JOBmatch.dypa.gov.gr platform that matches job-seekers to tourism businesses seeking staff, noting that it was the latest digital tool employed in the effort to bring down unemployment, the ongoing process of paying compensation to Thessaly flood victims and the auctions for the lease of beach space by businesses.

Marinakis concluded the press briefing by announcing that the prime minister is visiting Thrace on Tuesday to attend celebrations for the liberation of Thrace in the city of Komotini.
