President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Tuesday had a meeting with the Governor General of Australia David Hurley, who is on an official visit to Greece at her invitation.
Their meeting focused on the steadfast bonds of friendship and cooperation between Greece and Australia and the margins for enhancing bilateral relations between the Greek and Australian governments.
Welcoming Hurley to Greece, President Sakellaropoulou expressed her conviction that his presence will help further improve bilateral relations and emphasised the two countries’ shared respect for freedom, democracy and international law, with emphasis on the law of the sea, saying it was “the foundation on which our relations are based”.
She also highlighted the presence of the strong and vibrant Greek expatriate community in Australia, the second-largest in the world, as another bridge linking the two countries.
Greece and Australia have adopted a common and decisive stance regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, she pointed out and the governments of the two countries have pledged to strengthen bilateral relations even further.
The governor general also stressed the strong bonds between Greece and Australians and highlighted the contribution of Australia’s Greeks to the country’s political and cultural life, as well as its sports.
“There are human bonds that unite us but there is also a deep respect for democracy and the rule of law and of the entire legislative system that is based on these principles,” he said, while also expressing his pleasure that he will going with Sakellaropoulou to the island of Limnos on Wednesday to honour those that participated in the Gallipoli campaign.
