“French and Greek companies in the field of defence must contribute to a common technological and industrial basis, which is indeed a necessary condition for the strategic autonomy of the Europeans”, French ambassador, Patrick Maisonnave, said at the reception he gave on the occasion of the International Defense and Security Exhibition (DEFEA) in Athens.

The French ambassador underlined in front of representatives of the French defence industry participating in the exhibition – including the giants NAVAL GROUP, Dassault and MBDA – and of senior officials of the military leadership of Greece and France, the scope, time depth and extraordinary quality of the Greek-French defence cooperation, while noting that the Greek government demands greater participation of the Greek industry in all future defence contracts and the French industry is committed to this.

Making an assessment of the bilateral defence relations over the past four years, he said that “our governments have paved the way by signing the corporate strategic agreement that binds us,” underlining that “never before have the exchanges between our staffs been so dense, never the exercises between our armies have been so numerous and the presence of the French Armed Forces in the Southern Mediterranean has rarely been so intense.”

Pointing out the significant scope of Greece’s decision to choose French weapons systems and technology, “yesterday the Mirage, today the Rafale and the FDI frigates”, he underlined that this choice “strengthens the political ties between our two countries and the interoperability of our troops.”

Regarding the contribution of the Greek defence industry, he noted that “there is no doubt that French and Greek companies in the defence sector must contribute together to a common technological and industrial basis, which is indeed a necessary condition for the strategic autonomy of the Europeans.”

“The acquisition of French weapon systems means activity, transfer of technology and jobs in Greece,” he added.
