Bob Menendez, this Christmas, I gave you my heart! As long as we see your name on the political map, hope is alive!

Dear Bob Menendez,

It is the first time I do not need to explain where Cyprus is. But mostly, I don’t need to explain that 37% of Cyprus’ land was illegally invaded and occupied by the Turkish troops since 1974. Some years ago, thanks to a great Cypriot-American, Tasos Zambas, you visited Famagusta, my city, and confirmed the Turkish atrocities.

Mr. Menendez, nine years ago, a while before I migrated to the USA, I would never have thought that an American politician would embrace the country I was born in such a genuine way. It took me time to realize that your concern for Cyprus and Greece was 100% pure. I am sorry to say this, but as a human being and a professor, the truth is on top of the ethical behavior I teach.

I saw you fighting several times for Greece and Cyprus and the way you embraced all the Cypriots. I saw you demanding Turkey withdraw all Turkish troops and leave the island and its people to live peacefully. You demanded Turkey respect human rights and stop the illegal actions in Famagusta that violate the U.N. resolutions. I saw you working hard to break the (unfair) embargo and give back Cyprus the right to buy guns from the USA.

Mr. Menendez, I cannot remember everything you did for Cyprus (and Greece). I was five years old since the last time I saw my mom driving out of Famagusta (my dad was missing, we did not know where he was). Now I am 53; I cannot remember everything, but I can never forget what happened in 1974!

This past week, you asked your colleagues not to trust F-16 to Erdogan’s hands. You also demanded Erdogan to:

1) Stop threatening Greece, a NATO ally.

2) Stop flying in Greece’s sky.

3) Stop any illegal movements to reopen Famagusta.

4) Withdraw all their troops and soldiers from the island.

Mr. Menendez, I cannot thank you enough, but I can say this:

This Christmas, I gave you my (Famagustian) heart! As long as we see your name on the political map, hope is alive!

Merry Christmas, Mr. Menendez. God Bless you!
