The Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Region of the Peloponnese and the Municipality of Monemvasia are proceeding with the conversion of the house of the poet Yiannis Ritsos, in the Castle City of Monemvasia, into a Municipal Museum, through a Cultural Development Programme Agreement.

The project, which is financed by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, will be implemented, under the supervision of its competent services, by the Antiquities Ephorate of Lakonia and the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage.

According to a ministry announcement, the cooperation for the creation of an exhibition space dedicated to Yiannis Ritsos, one of the most emblematic figures of modern Greek poetry, was highlighted during the inspection by the Culture and Sports Minister Lina Mendoni of the late poet’s home and the monuments of the city.

  • The purpose of the project is to create an exhibition space to present the personality of the poet and his relationship with his birthplace, Monemvasia.

In the permanent exhibition, the life and work of the poet will be presented, through selected emblematic poems for each section, which are considered milestones of Greek and international literary heritage.

Creating connections with the historical past, strengthening collective memory and raising awareness among residents of the Municipality of Monemvasia by highlighting the history and culture of the area are the main objectives of the design proposal for the exhibition, contributing on a long-term basis to the sustainable development of the area.

The scope of the contract includes the necessary museological and museographic studies and the general work of shaping and converting the house into the Yiannis Ritsos Museum.

The poet’s different way of looking at Monemvasia, which the exhibition will offer, will help promote and showcase this historically emblematic place. In a modern digital, interactive and entertaining way, it will enrich the cultural identity of the municipality and help attract visitors.
