The founder of the non-governmental organisation “HumanRights360”, Epaminondas Farmakis, in a statement on Thursday, said that his organisation had formed the “mistaken belief” that the islet on which 38 refugees were found in the midst of the Evros River was Greek territory.

Farmakis underlined that “our organisation does not wish, under any circumstances, to create a border issue between Greece and Turkey, nor does it question the borders between the two countries.”

Its purpose and concern, he added, “is exclusively the protection of human life and dignity, always within the framework of national and international law, as well as the statutory procedures.”

Specifically, regarding the case of the 38 refugees, Farmakis clarified that “from the public information available to us and taking into account that the area presents a particularly complex territorial status quo as, depending on the flow of the river, sections of land emerge from time to time, we formed the mistaken belief that the above persons were on Greek soil.”

Also, he noted that “the entry of a journalist into the reception and identification centre of Evros was made solely at his own initiative without the prior knowledge, involvement or having first informed the administration of our organisation. Besides, the above person has never been an employee or partner of our organisation, as was inaccurately stated in the transfer document of his entry request.”
