The high level of Greece-United States relations and the prospects of further improving them was discussed by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and US Senator and Chairman of the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee Robert (“Bob”) Menendez in Athens on Friday.
Menendez is in Athens to receive an honorary doctorate from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens.
They discussed the upcoming Fourth Round of the Greece-US Strategic Dialog, which will take place in Athens in October, and international developments during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Menendez expressed his appreciation for the clear stance of Greece, which supported Ukraine from the start with humanitarian and defense material, while Mitsotakis expressed his appreciation for the senator’s contribution to strengthening Greek-American relations and peace and collaboration in the East Mediterranean.
The premier underlined in particular Menendez’s legislative initiative, the US-Greece Defense and Interparliamentary Partnership Act of 2021, which he promoted with Senator Marco Rubio, a new law supporting the upgrade of Greece’s military.
Menendez referred to a recent visit he paid with the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee to Alexandroupolis, where a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) terminal is being built, and concurred with the prime minister on the project’s speedy progress.
PM Mitsotakis was scheduled to host a dinner in Menendez’s honor in the same evening.
