“The relationship between Greece and the UK is strong. Let’s strengthen it further. It’s time to do the right thing and reunite the Parthenon Sculptures in Athens. A move backed by the British people,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis posted on Wednesday on Twitter, citing an opinion poll conducted in the UK which showed that a majority of those responding were in favour of their return.

Mitsotakis also attached the poll question and its findings:

“The Parthenon Marbles are a collection of Ancient Greek Sculptures that were removed from the Acropolis in Athens in 1801-12 (when Greece was ruled by the Ottoman Empire) and have been on display in the British Museum since 1817. The Greek government has requested their permanent return, but the British Museum has refused. Where do you believe the Parthenon Marbles belong?”

According to the poll, 59 pct of the participants believe that the Sculptures must return to Greece compared to only 18 pct which believes that they must remain in the British Museum. A 22 pct of the participants replied that they don’t know.
