President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Sunday attended events on the island of Crete marking the 78th anniversary since the Viannos Holocaust, during which she was proclaimed an honorary citizen of Viannos.

She attended an official mass at the Church of Agion Panton and then a ceremony commemorating the victims of the massacres in Seli, Amires during which there was a memorial service and the president laid a wreath at a monument erected in their memory.

During a speech at the event, she also referred to the war reparations owed by Germany for the Nazi atrocities committed in Greece, saying that this was a matter that remained open and “a struggle that must some day reach its vindication.”
