Digital Governance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis referred to the digital transformation of Greece that became a necessity due to the pandemic, during his message at the 5th Hellenic-German Economic Forum on Tuesday.

“Digital transformation is now a reality for our country, which is constantly changing, and in light of Covid-19, it had lately become a long-outstanding issue that was now a necessity. In our case and worldwide, it became a necessity because the states, just like the companies, had to continue to function and this had to be done well,” Pierrakakis stressed.

The Minister of Digital Governance noted that state digitisation had remained a pending issue for many years, resulting in labyrinthine bureaucratic procedures and great difficulties for citizens and businesses using state services. This was a mission for the government, which managed in two years to establish the digital edifice of the state, with the gov.gr platform as its central pillar.

  • At the moment, more and more services were being added, while at the same time procedures were being simplified because the goal, as Pierrakakis explained, was not to digitise the existing processes but also to redesign them and abolish any services that overlapped with others.

The first big step towards restoring the citizen’s trust in the state has been established through this platform, the minister underlined.

“Of course, this is just the beginning, there is still a very big backlog, which is reflected in the thousands of small pending issues which concern what still needs to be done over the next period. A large part of our strategy focuses on additional services that we will see posted on gov.gr, services such as real estate transfers, driving license renewals and many more,” he said.
