A meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after the conclusion of the NATO Summit in Brussels led to agreement on not allowing tensions to escalate going forward, government spokesperson Aristotelia Peloni said on Tuesday.

Referring to the meeting between the two leaders on Monday, at the start of her briefing to the press, Peloni said:

“Both agreed that it was positive that there is direct contact between them and despite the diametrically opposed positions of the two countries on various issues, they agreed that the tensions of 2020 should not be repeated in 2021.”

She added that “both welcomed as positive the activation of all existing communication channels and expressed their satisfaction over the promotion of the positive 25-point agenda, which all the deputy foreign ministers of Greece and Turkey are already working on, as well as the Greece-Turkey agreement for the mutual recognition of Covid-19 Vaccination Certificates”.

As Peloni said “Mitsotakis underlined that Greece and Turkey can work together to address the migration-refugee issue and the tackling of trafficking rings according to the EU-Turkey Statement. In this light, she said that the return of 1,450 persons whose asylum application has been rejected will have a positive impact in the EU as well.”

PM rejected two-state solution for Cyprus

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also discussed the Cyprus issue during his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, government spokesperson Aristotelia Peloni said on Tuesday. She said the prime minister reiterated that a two-state solution as proposed by Turkey and the Turkish-Cypriot side is rejected as a matter of principle since it is contrary to both UN Security Council resolution and European Union laws and regulations.

Mitsotakis also said that he is looking forward to close and frequent contact with Turkey at all levels, even the highest, in order for bridges of trust to be built in the interest of both countries, Peloni reported.

Obviously, she added, the differences between the two sides remain, nothwithstanding the positive attitude, while it remains to be seen whether this positive attitude will also lead to positive steps for the improvement of relations.
