Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said that problems in the eastern Mediterranean can only be reseolved under International Law and particularly the Law of the Sea, at a panel of the Delphi Economic Forum on Friday.

Dendias, in a debate with the participation of the Foreign Ministers of Cyprus, Spain and Malta as well as main opposition SYRIZA responsible for foreign affairs George Katrougalos, noted the importance of the eastern Mediterranean for the world’s balance.

In this context, he highlighted that Greece is trying to persuade all its neighbours that there must be rules in order to resolve long-term, current and future problems. Otherwise, he said, there will be no way to move ahead.  He said that countries of the Balkan and Gulf region agree with this approach, with exceptions unfortunately like that of Turkey.

Asked if he planned to meet soon with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, Dendias said definitely, as Cavusoglu “is a friend. I have invited him to visit Greece, and he has accepted the invitation. (…) The date depends on him.”
