“For the 10th time in 12 months I am here to talk about the course of the pandemic, a fact that proves that our democracy is working, despite the complications of the coronavirus, but also that the government regularly informs the parties and citizens,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Friday in Parliament, during the debate about the government’s plan to manage the health crisis and the coronavirus pandemic’s repercussions on the economy.

Everywhere in the world, he noted, the virus was proving itself resistant on its way out a critical two-month period lay ahead, the prime minister said and cited to data relating to the management of the pandemic on a European-wide basis.

“I do not want to invoke international data that reflect painful facts. However, we must agree on the main topics of discussion,” Mitsotakis stressed, and noted that according to the European Health Organisation, Greece ranks 23rd in terms of human lives lost per million. “If we were at the European average, we would have lost another 8,000 people, which corresponds to an entire town,” he added.

He then referred to vaccinations, saying that “we are in the 5th place among EU countries for the number of people vaccinated with both doses,” but also that “in the index for excess mortality, our country has one of the best performances in Europe, or 6.6 pct, based on a French study “.
“Pandemic management is a marathon, not a sprint. Despite the great difficulties, the conclusion is one. Greece did better than countries that had better health systems. The picture of disaster systematically projected by the opposition is a lie. Obviously no one is celebrating,” the prime minister said.

The national health system has held up and the effort is continuing, he added.
“The latest coronavirus attack is striking hard in the whole of Europe,” the prime minister said, adding that “here in Greece it was dealt with through the measures we took in February.”
