The SARS-CoV-2 viral load in sewage taken from the city of Thessaloniki was reduced by 50 pct on a weekly basis, based on a measurements taken by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) in collaboration with the city’s water and sewage company, EYATh.

The samples in the previous week had shown that rates had levelled off to the same rates as in late October while the decline continued at a faster pace this week.

“The latest measurements are comparable to those in mid-October. The slow but progressive reduction in viral load secretions shows we are on the right path,” said AUTH Rector and head of the project Nikos Papaioannou, talking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).

“We are not safe yet, though, because there continues to be a significant spread in the community, capable of reversing the downward trend if people relax and are complacent over the holidays,” he added.

The last three measurements taken, on December 16, 18 and 21st, after correcting for various environmental factors that may affect the result, have an average viral load that is 50 pct less that the average of the previous three measurements on December 9, 11 and 14.
