The murder of teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos by a policeman on December 6, 2008 “left its mark on an entire generation,” SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras said in social media posts on Sunday, the anniversary of the killing.

This is today’s generation of today’s young professionals in Greece and abroad, “children of crisis that grew up in a different Greece than that of their parents – who were targeted as troublemakers at 15 years of age and today, at 25, are called irresponsible and dangerous for public health by the same so-called protectors of order,” the main opposition leader said, referring to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tsipras launched into an attack of the New Democracy governmethat which he said has “stood against progress and against the people who doubt the status quo for decades.”

“It is our belief that societies progress based on the dreams, abilities and ambitions of younger people,” he stressed, “that social progress is born out of doubt, not by recycling injustice. The government that rules Greece today has never believed this.” It is “our duty to build a Greece of Alexis’ generation,” he added.
