Thessaloniki is still a long away from flattening the epidemiological curve, according tomeasurements taken by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) and the Thessaloniki Water and Sewage Company (EYATH) to detect the concentration of the SARS-CoV-2 genome in city’s wastewater.
According to an analysis of last week’s samples, the concentration of the viral genome in Thessaloniki’s sewage is still increasing rapidly, in contrast to the declining numbers of cases reported over the last few days.
“At this stage of the pandemic, the findings do not surprise us. The trend remains upward and reflects the extensive spread of the virus in the community. When the measures taken start to pay off, the increase will cease to be exponential in the first phase, before the trend stabilises and reverses to a downward trend. We hope that the measurements in the next two weeks will begin to show this course,” the rector of AUTh and coordinator of the research team, Prof. Nikos Papaioannou, said in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) on Tuesday.
“We should all realise that by observing the measures of personal protection and social distancing, we help the public health system to provide better care to those who are sick and at the same time prove that we want to return to our lives soon. The strict observance of the measures recommended by the experts is the personal responsibility of each of us individually and an obligation towards society as a whole,” Papaioannou added.
