Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras on Friday said that there is no other way for Greece to defend its right to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles apart from actually exercising it, in an interview to REAL FM radio.

“This it the time to exercise this right, starting from southern and eastern Crete and, depending on the developments, to proceed south of our islands in the Eastern Mediterranean, namely the islands of Kassos, Karpathos, Rhodes and the complex of Kastellorizo islands,” he said, noting that the reason for this was Turkey’s “strong questioning” of “the sovereign right” and its “de facto dispute with research very probably within the 12 nautical mile limit”.
