A no-confidence vote tabled by SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras against Finance Minister Christos Staikouras on Thursday suspended debate in parliament on the draft bankruptcy law.

The main opposition leader tabled the motion during a debate in parliament’s plenary on a bill containing a new bankruptcy code for both businesses and private individuals, including regulations on home owners who have defaulted on their debts.

Discussion on the motion will begin at 18:00 on Friday, while that on the bill will resume once the no-confidence vote is complete (the latest by Sunday).

In his justification for the motion, which required the support of 50 MPs, Tsipras called the draft bill “an abomination” and described it as “a law of bankruptcy and povertization extending to individuals and families.” The proposals, he charged, will “immediately liquify their assets” and “tear down the protection of a primary home, turning Greeks poor in secret.”

The motion will force Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to appear in parliament and explain the bill, including “why he defends you, Mr. Minister” in endangering the status of home owners during a pandemic, Tsipras said.

Responding, Staikouras said that Tsipras was the one who signed away the protection of the primary home in 2019, while thousands of foreclosed properties were auctioned off under the Syriza government.

State Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, speaking on behalf of the government, told plenary that he supports the immediate start of debate on the motion, instead of a two-day delay allowed by regulations, and said the event will prove to the public that while a pandemic is raging and Turkish aggression rising, the main opposition is dealing with confidence motions.

To be approved, the no-confidence motion must be supported by 151 MPs, otherwise it is rejected. In this latter case, it cannot be retabled for another 6 months, and in that case only if it is supported by the entire body of 300 MPs.
