The funds of the European Union (EU) Recovery and Resilience Fund provide Greece with an unprecedented opportunity to restructure its productive model and make it more competitive, extroverted and sustainable with targeted investments, European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas said on Friday during the 2nd Balkan Forum organised via video conference.

He added that these investments will allow the country to prepare for the green transition and digital transformation, but also for companies to open up to new markets in the Balkans. This would allow Greece “to finally take advantage of our strategic advantages in areas from the primary sector to logistics services, so that the region really becomes a productive hub of the Balkans, the investment centre of our neighborhood.”

The Commission’s vice-president also stressed that “Greece, in the region of the Western Balkans, does not simply present ideas, but is also able to innovate.”

Schinas stressed the need for the country to continue the necessary reforms, as “the economic crisis has taught us – unfortunately in a harsh way – that European funds and resources alone are not enough.” That is why, he added, in its talks with the member states the Commission places particular emphasis on reforms, from the rapid delivery of justice to the creation of an effective and equitable insurance system that will become a major investment lever instead of leading to middle-aged retirees.

“The Greek government has a cohesive reform plan. It is the overall responsibility of all of us to support these reforms, and the investments with which they will be combined,” he said, adding, “I want to assure you that Europe will give you practical support in this planning.”
