Eighteen members of the US House of Representatives have requested, in a letter to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the repatriation of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece in 2021.

As reported by the British press, the 18 US senators urged the British government to negotiate seriously with the Greek government for the return of the Sculptures to their birthplace.

Responding to a question from reporters on Thursday about the next steps planned by the ministry, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said she is thankful for the letter of the 18 US senators and invites them to come to Athens as soon as the pandemic conditions allow.

She also pointed out that “with this initiative they confirm their admiration and respect for the values inherited from classical antiquity by the western world,” and added that “it makes us believe that the new spirit of philhellenism that we see in Europe has solid roots beyond the Atlantic.”
