A group of 139 asylum seekers left the Greek islands on Wednesday in order to be transferred to Germany.

These are children with serious health problems, along with members of their nuclear family, a total of 86 people, as well as 53 unaccompanied minors.

Alternate Migration and Asylum Minister Giorgos Koumoutsakos pointed out that this is the first joint flight, “that is, there are unaccompanied children, part of the European relocation programme of 1,600 unaccompanied minors, and children with serious health problems along with their families as part of the bilateral Greek-German cooperation.”

Koumoutsakos explained that “every such flight has a lot of work behind it. It is a very complex process. Needless to say, all those who left today have had a coronavirus test which was, of course, negative” adding that “Greece is now creating a model for how the relocations take place. The persistent work done by the migration and asylum ministry and the Special Secretary for the Protection of Unaccompanied Minors, produces results.”

The relocation programme of the ministry is implemented by the Special Secretariat for the Protection of Unaccompanied Minors in cooperation with the International Organisation for Migration, the European Asylum Service and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and is funded by the European Commission.
