The government declared a state of emergency and civil protection measures in two areas in Evia and Macedonia respectively, following devastating storms over the weekend that resulted in fatalities and destroyed property and crops, it said on Tuesday.
According to the Civil Protection Secretary General Vassilis Papageorgiou, the areas under emergency measures include Chalkida and Dirfi-Messapies (Evia), and the area of Lagadas in the Thessaloniki metropolitan area.
The six-month status of these regions will allow “the management of emergency needs and repercussions from heavy rain and powerful winds they experienced from August 6 to 9.”
The communities of Anthidona, Stroponas and Agia Sofia (Evia) and Ardamerio (Macedonia) are already under emergency status, the agency said.
