Greek-German cooperation across political, economic, scientific or cultural sectors benefits both countries, is important for Europe and offers opportunities for the future, the German embassy in Athens said on Tuesday following the cancellation of the 85th Thessaloniki International Fair, where Germany was to be this year’s honoured country.

In an announcement titled “Greece and Germany: Strong partners in the crisis – Together in growth and innovation even without TIF,” the German embassy said it respected the Greek government’s decision to cancel the annual international business expo for preventative reasons related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Germany’s preparations for the fair were focused on joining Greece in signalling the return of the latter to development, following the restrictions on the economy introduced by the pandemic. Over 60 exhibitors planned to attend from Germany, including startups, major groups listed on Frankfurt’s stock market, specialised research institutes and the twinned with Thessaloniki municipalities of Cologne and Leipzig, all preparing to meet at TIF and discuss the major issues of the future, such as green growth, digital economy, electromobility and contemporary means of communication.

“Fully embracing the spirit of the slogan of the German Presidency of the EU Council ‘All together’,” the embassy said, “Let us make Europe strong again!”. It concluded its statement by saying, “Good morning, Thessaloniki! See you soon!”
