SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras opposed to the privatisation of Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP) on Tuesday during a meeting with EYDAP Workers’ Federation, noting that “water is a public good, a human right and cannot be included in the sale process.”

He stressed that “certain goods, critical to human life and dignity, cannot be subject to the laws of the market, they cannot be marketable goods.”

He explained that this is why SYRIZA tried in the constitutional review to include water in human rights, but “it was not accepted because the current government did not vote.”

In this context, he noted that “the discussion on the privatization of water is completely out of context and we should all realize that some goods are not sold and not bought, but must be goods that all citizens must have access to.”
