SYRIZA spokesman Alexis Charitsis slammed the Interior Ministry’s financial support program for local government ‘Antonis Tritsis’ that was presented on Thursday by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, calling it ‘outdated.’

He said that “New Democracy is turning the country backwards, with an outdated model of governance that costs citizens dearly and serves the interests of the elite.”

Even before the program (named after late Athens mayor Antonis Tritsis) was announced, he said, some mayors had filed complaints that municipalities assigned the drafting of financing proposals to private companies.

Charitsis added that municipalities are on the verge of bankruptcy and burdened “with the heavy bill of the coronavirus pandemic,” but the government “segregates them into ‘elites’ and ‘plebeians’ (…), and promotes a distorted and inefficient development model.”
