Solidarity, support to other human beings and service “are our collective antibodies against the poison of hate and racism that corrodes our societies,” SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras said in a message on World Refugees Day on Saturday.

In a Facebook post, the party leader referred to the recently ended coronavirus pandemic lockdown and said that “recently we stayed home to protect the people we love. But others have to abandon their homes, cities and homeland for exactly the same reason.”

Tsipras said that science, evolution and technology are fighting the pandemic, along with brilliant scientific minds in laboratories that work to resolve the issue. But “for those who tear up roots from their homeland, the resolution of their problem cannot be found in any laboratory,” he underlined.

The solution is “within each of us”, he pointed out, and said that “solidarity, supporting our fellow-beings, offering even from a meagre income to those who need it are not simply beautiful words, (…) they are the rich heritage of a people who knows what it means to tear up roots and go.”

The Greek population, he said, “does not forget that once the cries from boats of the persecuted in the Aegean Sea were not heard in Arabic or English, they were heard in Greek.”
