Not a single life has so far been lost to the novel coronavirus in accommodation facilities for refugees and migrants in Greece, said Migration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarachis on Wednesday in parliament, replying to SYRIZA MP Yiannis Mouzalas.
Mitarachis said that Covid-19 cases in refugee facilities throughout the country are at 0.2 pct and there are no confirmed cases on the islands, despite the fact that checks are carried out daily at the hotspots in Moria, VIAL and Vathy on the islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos, respectively.
“So far the islands are clean and we have incidents only in three of the 93 hosting facilities,” Mitarachis said.

With respect to the facility in Kranidi, he noted that this was placed in quarantine from the first moment that the infection was discovered and there is no contamination of the local community in the area.

On Mouzalas’ proposal for the creation of “quarantine centres” on the islands for future entrances of migrants and refugees, Mitarachis said that there are infirmaries operating outside the hotspots in all three islands in case they are needed, while adding that there have been no migrant or refugee arrivals so far in April.
