The Austrian government has pledged to send 181 special containers for the accommodation and health care of migrants and refugees to Greece, as confirmed in a video conference on Wednesday between Alternate Migration and Asylum Minister Giorgos Koumoutsakos and Austria’s Interior Minister Karl Nehammer.

Koumoutsakos had asked for the containers to meet the needs of housing and monitoring the health of asylum-seekers. During the video conference the ministers agreed to immediately proceed with the planned procedures, so that the containers can reach Greece as soon as possible.

The Greek ministry said in a statement: “The cooperation of the two governments aims at the timely preparation for dealing with possible consequences from the combination of the migration crisis and the pandemic.”
