“Greece should support the request for the issuing of a eurobond but will it,” asked main opposition SYRIZA’s head for financial affairs Euclid Tsakalotos ahead of Tuesday’s Eurogroup meeting, where discuss the issue of so-called “Covid bond” will be discussed.

In his statement, Tsakalotos underlined that SYRIZA adamantly supports the issue of such a bond.
He also said that this request is backed by Italy and France, adding that the European Commission is already examining it as a proposal.  Tsakalotos urged Finance Minister Christos Staikouras to raise this issue emphatically, adding that the government will have SYRIZA’s support. He also called on Staikouras to “support any position for an extension of measures, as the request by the other southern countries for ESM lending without conditions and programmes, though I am afraid that this tool will be prove inadequate”.

Europe, said Tsakalotos, should immediately take more aggressive measures. The workers and businesses need ‘fresh cash” in order to avoid a new debt crisis once the health crisis has ended,” he noted.

“Greece should wage a battle in this direction and I hope my position is not considered maximalist or populist,” Tsakalotos said.
