Έκκληση διανοουμένων: Για τη σωτηρία και την άμεση απελευθέρωση του Τζούλιαν Ασσάντζ

Εξήντα διεθνώς γνωστοί διανοούμενοι από δεκαπέντε χώρες, με επιστολή τους προς τον προκαθήμενο της Αγγλικανικής Εκκλησίας Αρχιεπίσκοπο του Καντέρμπουρυ, του ζητούν να χρησιμοποιήσει όλη την επιρροή του, μεταφέροντας το αίτημά τους και στη Βασίλισσα Ελισάβετ, προκειμένου να απελευθερωθεί άμεσα ο Τζούλιαν Ασσάνζ, που κρατείται στις βρετανικές φυλακές υψίστης ασφαλείας Belmarsh και του οποίου κινδυνεύει η υγεία και η ζωή
- Μεταξύ των διανοουμένων που υπογράφουν την επιστολή είναι η κάτοχος του βραβείου Νόμπελ Ειρήνης Mairead Maguire, ο αμερικανός σκηνοθέτης Όλιβερ Στόουν, ο αμερικανός συγγραφέας και διανοούμενος Νόαμ Τσόμσκυ, ο αγωνιστής για τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα και πρώην ηγετικό στέλεχος της Διεθνούς Αμνηστίας Francis Boyle, o Daniel Ellsberg, που συγκλόνισε την Αμερική με τις αποκαλύψεις του για τον πόλεμο στο Βιετνάμ (The Pentagon Papers), κάτοχος του “εναλλακτικού” βραβείου Νόμπελ (Right Livehood Award) και του βραβείου Όλαφ Πάλμε, ο πρώην επικεφαλής της Επιτροπής Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων της Κοινοβουλευτικής Συνέλευσης του Συμβουλίου της Ευρώπης Dick Marty, ο πρώην διευθυντής της γαλλικής επιθεώρησης Monde Diplomatique Alain Gresh, η Γερμανίδα βουλευτής Sahra Wagenknecht, ο Γουίλιαμ Πολκ, πρώην Πρόεδρος του Ινστιτούτου Διεθνών Υποθέσεων Adlai Stevenson, ο αμερικανός πρώην αν. υπουργός Οικονομικών Paul Craig Roberts και πολλοί άλλοι.
Από την Ελλάδα υπογράφουν την επιστολή ο Μανώλης Γλέζος, ο Μίκης Θεοδωράκης και ο δημοσιογράφος και συγγραφέας Δημήτρης Κωνσταντακόπουλος.
Οι υπογράφοντες καλούν τις αρμόδιες αρχές του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου να απελευθερώσουν άμεσα τον Julian Assange, πολίτη της Αυστραλίας, από τη φυλακή Belmarsh όπου κρατείται κατά “τρόπο άδικο και βάναυσο”, όπως υποστηρίζουν. Επισημαίνουν ότι ο Assange δεν κατηγορείται για κανένα αδίκημα στη Βρετανία ή στη Σουηδία και ότι οι μόνες κατηγορίες εναντίον του προέρχονται από τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, είναι καθαρά πολιτικές και αποβλέπουν στο να τιμωρηθεί για δημοσίευση ακριβών πληροφοριών που του δόθηκαν από πληροφορημένες πηγές.
- Αυτή είναι μια συνηθισμένη πρακτική όλων των mainstream ΜΜΕ, συνεχίζει η επιστολή, χαρακτηρίζοντας ως “όνειδος” το ότι αυτά τα Μέσα δεν υπερασπίζονται τώρα τον κ. Assange, έστω κι αν έχουν δημοσιεύσει τις ίδιες ακριβώς πληροφορίες που δημοσίευσε και αυτός. Με την τωρινή μεταχείριση που επιφυλάσσει στον Julian Assange, το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο “ευτελίζεται σε απλό εργαλείο πολιτικής καταπίεσης των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών”, προσθέτουν οι υπογράφοντες, που θεωρούν ότι αυτή η υπόθεση έχει κλονίσει πολύ σοβαρά την εμπιστοσύνη στο δικαστικό σύστημα και τα ΜΜΕ.
Οι υπογράφοντες χαρακτηρίζουν την τωρινή φυλάκιση του Julian Assange “στίγμα” στο δικαστικό σύστημα του βρετανικού έθνους και “απαξίωση” της Βρετανικής αξιοπρέπειας, προειδοποιώντας ότι, αν αυτό το “σκάνδαλο” μπορεί σήμερα να αποκρύπτεται σε μεγάλο βαθμό, θα αναδειχθεί μετά βεβαιότητος στην ιστορία αν δεν ληφθούν άμεσα μέτρα από τους ανώτατους εκπροσώπους του Βρετανικού λαού για να διορθωθεί αυτή η μείζων αδικία. Και η επιστολή καταλήγει:
“Απευθυνόμαστε στην αίσθησή σας δικαίου και εθνικής τιμής για να τιμήσετε τις καλύτερες παραδόσεις της Βρετανικής δημοκρατίας και του σεβασμού των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων, απελευθερώνοντας άμεσα τον Julian Assange”.

Α letter signed by 60 intellectuals from 15 countries was delivered to Lambeth Palace calling on His Grace, Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, to use his moral influence to end the unjustified imprisonment of Julian Assange in Belmarsh Prison.

Archbishop of Canterbury
We the undersigned respectfully call on the moral authorities of the United Kingdom to use their influence to obtain immediately release of Julian Assange, citizen of Australia, from Belmarsh prison where he is being unjustly and cruelly incarcerated.
Julian Assange is not charged with any crime or even misdemeanor in Britain, and has fully served his sentence for his single offense: jumping bail to avoid extradition to the United States via Sweden. He was not and is not charged for any crime in Sweden. The sole charges against him originate in the United States, on purely political grounds, aimed at punishing Julian Assange for publication of accurate information provided by informed sources. This is a regular practice of all mainstream media, which now shamefully fail to speak out in defense of Mr. Assange, even when they published exactly the same information that he did.
It is quite clear that in their current treatment of Julian Assange, the United Kingdom is debasing itself as a mere instrument of political repression exercised by the United States.
Your Grace,
The current imprisonment of Julian Assange is a blot on the nation’s judicial system, a disgrace to British decency. This scandal may be largely hidden today but will surely emerge in history unless measures are taken immediately by the highest representatives of the British people to correct this major injustice.
We ask you to respectfully transmit this message to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
We appeal to your sense of justice and of national honor to uphold the best traditions of British democracy and respect for human rights by calling for the immediate freeing of Julian Assange.
