Greek scientist Peggy Agouris named provost at historic William & Mary University

Peggy Agouris, an award-winning scholar, researcher and dean of the College of Science at George Mason University, was named provost at William & Mary University in Virginia, the second oldest university in the nation, the institution announced recently.
- Agouris will assume her duties as chief academic officer as of July 1. She will be the sixth provost of William & Mary, founded by charter of King William III and Queen Mary II of England signed in 1693 in Virginia.
- She received her engineering degree from the National Technical University of Athens, and her master’s and doctoral degrees from The Ohio State University. As an undergraduate, she also received a degree in classical music and piano from the Greek Conservatory.
According to a W&M announcement, she is an expert in digital image processing and analysis, remote sensing and geospatial information systems, and has received more than 35 million dollars in external research funding.
“It is an exciting time to join William & Mary,” Agouris said, adding that “it is humbling to be selected to now lead the academic side of such an extraordinary institution, committed as it is to teaching and research equally, and whose talented faculty are matched only by the strength of their students.”
