State Minister and government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos on Friday sternly attacked main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis for his ‘programme of social devastation’ and also announced a new government package of tax relief and social support measures.

  • Speaking to the public broadcaster ERT, he explained that substantial fiscal space has been created, which will be used to support the social state and the great majority of citizens. He pointed out that an estimated fiscal space of 5.5 billion euros is envisaged in the period 2019-2022, while a decision will be made in the near future on how exactly this will be allocated each year, with announcements on a new package of social support and tax relief measures due to be made soon.

Asked if the government is going to bring back the 13th pension, he reiterated that the issue will be decided over the coming period, given that there is fiscal space for social support measures.

  • Tzanakopoulos also noted that Greece had succeeded in getting a “historic” debt settlement, while underlining that the primary surpluses issue remains open.

“If there is someone who can raise the issue and get a better settlement, this is the current government,” he said.
