The EU must formulate a regulation on a more effective relationship with the behemoths of the Internet, based on European values and the protection of the freedom of speech, Deputy Digital Policy, Telecoms & Information Minister Lefteris Kretsos said on Thursday in Brussels.

Speaking at the EU Council of Ministers for Culture and Audiovisual media, Kretsos called for stronger policies on media literacy and stricter regulations on fact-checkers’ sources of funding and professional credibility, citing a controversial agreement between Facebook and Ellinika (Greek) Hoaxes site.

He also called for transparency in the finances of large Internet platforms and regulations preventing media cartels or agglomeration of outlets by the mass media.
