Greek unemployment rate at 18.5 pct in January, Eurostat report says: 873,000 unemployed people




BRUSSELS (ANA-MPA/C.Vasilaki)—The Greek unemployment rate was 18.5 pct of the workforce in January 2019, from 18.4 pct in December, but down significantly from 20.6 pct in January 2018, Eurostat said in a report released here on Tuesday.

  • The number of unemployed people in Greece totaled 873,000 in January, with the unemployment rate among men at 14.5 pct and among women at 23.6 pct. The unemployment rate among young people (aged up to 25 years old) was 39.7 pct in January, from 39.8 pct in December.
  • In the Eurozone, the unemployment rate was 7.7 pct of the workforce in March from 7.8 pct in February and 8.5 pct in March last year, while in the EU the unemployment rate was 6.4 pct in March from 6.5 pct in February and 7.0 pct in March 2018. The number of unemployed people in the Eurozone was 12.6 million in March, while in the EU it totaled 15.9 million.

    Greece (18.5 pct in January), Spain (14 pct) and Italy (10.2 pct) recorded the highest unemployment rates, while Czech Republic (1.9 pct) and Germany (3.2 pct) had the lowest rates.
