Greek unemployment rate fell to 18 pct of the workforce in December 2018, HSA says

Greek unemployment rate fell to 18 pct of the workforce in December 2018, from 18.3 pct in November and 20.8 pct in December 2017, Hellenic Statistical Authority said in a report released on Thursday.

  • The statistics service said that employment grew in December, while unemployment among young people fell below 40 pct. The number of unemployed people totaled 851,556 in December, down 1.9 pct from November 2018, but down 14 pct compared with December 2017. The number of employed people totaled 3,868,241, up 0.1 pct from November 2018 and 2.8 pct from December 2017.

The unemployment rate among women was 23.1 pct in December form 26 pct in December 2017, while among men it was 14.1 pct from 16.7 pct respectively. The unemployment rate was higher among young people aged 15-24 years old (39.5 pct in December 2018 from 43.1 pct in December 2017), followed by the 25-34 age group (24.2 pct from 25.7 pct), the 35-44 age group (16.2 pct from 19.2 pct), the 45-54 age group (14.4 pct from 16.6 pct), the 55-64 age group (13.9 pct from 17.3 pct) and the 65-74 age group (8.7 pct from 11.9 pct).

Among the country’s regions, Epirus-Western Macedonia recorded the highest unemployment rate (21.1 pct from 26.1 pct in December 2017), followed by Aegean 19.6 pct from 20.4 pct), Thessaly-Central Greece (19 pct from 19.1 pct), Attica (18.5 pct from 21.3 pct), Macedonia-Thrace (18.5 pct from 20.8 pct), Peloponese-Western Greece-Ionian Islands (18.3 pct from 21.4 pct) and Crete (8.3 pct from 16.6 pct).
