“Green Book” Takes Top Honors, “Roma” wins Four Oscars: Lanthimos didn’t make it…

After all 24 Oscars were handed out Sunday night at the 91rst Academy Awards, Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron went home with three of them -for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director and Best Cinematographer—for his visually rich and personal film, “Roma,” about growing up in Mexico City in the 1970s. The film had been nominated in 10 categories.

He missed out on the Best Picture award, however, which was given to the drama/comedy “Green Book,” a movie about a black concert pianist on a concert tour of the segregated Deep South in 1962. The film won three awards, including Best Performance by a Supporting Actor, Mahershala Ali, and for Best Original Screenplay.

Greek director’s Yorgos Lanthimos’ black period comedy, “The Favourite” set in 18th century England went into the ceremony tying, “Roma” with 10 nominations— Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (two nominations), Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing. Only the British actress Olivia Coleman, who played Queen Anne in the film was honored with the Oscar for her performance in a leading role; Glenn Close was expected to win for her work in “The Wife.”

The super-hero movie, “Black Panther” also surprised audiences, winning two of the artistic awards for costume and production design and one for Best Original Score. The bio-pic, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” based on the life of the late rock legend, Freddie Mercury, swept up four Oscars for Best Performance by an Actor (Rami Malek), Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

Filmmaker Spike Lee, who has made over 35 films including the well known film, “Do the Right Thing, and his collaborative team, won for Best Adapted Screenplay for the film, “BlackKlansman.”

Other winners included Regina King, who starred in “If Beale Street Could Talk,” based on the novel by James Baldwin.
