SYRIZA-Independent Greeks divorce predetermined, says State Minister Vernardakis

The divorce between SYRIZA and the Independent Greeks (ANEL) party was now largely inevitable, despite a postponement of a meeting between Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, and ANEL leader, Panos Kammenos, Minister of State, Christoforos Vernardakis, indicated while talking to the radio station “Sto Kokkino” on Wednesday.

He added that, “in our opinion, Panos Kammenos is trapped, he has made a serious political error in estimating the course of developments but this concerns his own party and himself… of course, this has to trigger some developments and the interest is now tranferred to his party’s interior”.

“It is clear that we respect this cooperation and this is [what makes] Kammenos’ stance incomprehensible,” stated Vernardakis, adding that Kammenos was attempting to end “four years of seamless cooperation in everyday administration, with successful ministers in the government who have objectively worked [hard] in their sector,” with all that this entails.

“In any case we will continue, we are very secure, the government has the parliamentary majority,” Vernardakis said, while noting that the key to future developments would be the Prespes Agreement and its ratification by the Greek parliament, so as to avoid plunging Greece into “a great adventure”.

“I do not rule out the possibility -it is a common secret, but it concerns the Independent Greeks and the people in its ranks- that some of our current allies will fall in beside us, not because there is any secret process but because a spirit of cooperation, support, joint work and programming has been cultivated over the last four years,” he said.
