PM’s office on Prespes Agreement: ND and VMRO, two sides of the same coin

The Prime Minister’s office on Friday accused main opposition New Democracy (ND) and its leader, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, of hypocrisy in their stance on the Prespes Agreement, and compared their criticism of the deal to that of the nationalist VMRO party in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).

VMRO refused to support the four constitutional amendments that included a change the name of the country and fulfilled the terms of the Agreement, calling it harmful to the nation, a criticism also levelled by Mitsotakis to the government.

“ND claims that the Prespes Agreement cedes the so-called ‘Macedonian ethnicity,’ while VMRO claims that the Agreement erases the ‘Macedonian identity’. ND claims that the Prespes Agreement ‘cedes the Macedonian language’, while VMRO claims that the Agreement erases the ‘Macedonian language’,” the announcement from Maximos Mansion said.

Further, it said, ND calls the Agreement “humiliating” for Greece, while VMRO says it’s “humiliating” for FYROM. At least, it said, VMRO is sincere and definitely against the composite name, compared to the main opposition leader, who is “desperately searching for last-minute excuses and lies.” It said that both parties are “two sides of the same coin, that of using the idea of homeland for personal interests”.
