President Pavlopoulos visits Lesvos for the island’s liberation anniversary, sends message to Turkey

Greek President Prokopios Pavlopoulos said Greece is pursuing friendly relations with Turkey and supports its European direction, in an address delivered on Lesvos to commemorate the island’s liberation from the Ottoman Turks in 1912.

Greece’s continuing support depends however on Turkey’s respect of all international and European laws, Pavlopoulos said after laying a wreath at Eleftherias Square in Mytlini.

“Greece seeks friendly and good neighborly relations with all. For Turkey in particular, we support its European direction and strongly disagree with certain opinions within the European Union that claim the reverse,” he said.
The Greek president added, “Greece is determined to defend its sovereignty, borders and territory, on the basis of international and European law, as its borders and territory also comprise those of the European Union.”
