Explosive device found outside deputy prosecutor’s house in Vyronas deactivated by police experts

An explosive device planted outside the apartment building of Supreme Court (Areios Paghos) Deputy Prosecutor Isidoros Dogiakos in the Athens district of Vyronas was deactivated without an explosion and sent to the police forensic laboratories on Tuesday.

The explosive device was located early on Tuesday after phone calls to the website “Zougla.gr” and to the newspaper “Efimerida ton Syntakton”.

According to police sources, the device had been placed in a cooking pot inside the luggage box of a motorcycle parked outside the building.

The bomb disposal experts managed to deactivate the bomb without resorting to a controlled explosion, which will make it easier for police labs to collect evidence.

Nobody has assumed responsibility for setting the bomb so far and the person that phoned gave no clues in this direction. However, according to the same sources, the methology and the bomb assembly bears similarities with bombs made by the terror group “Conspiracy of Cells of Fire”.

The warning calls were made at 04:00 and the caller said that it was not a hoax. Police rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area and told residents to remain in their houses.

The area is still blocked until the Counter-terrorism squad and the forensics team conclude their investigation.

In statements Supreme Court Deputy Prosecutor Isidoros Dogiakos said that he is not currently investigating any case that might have made him a target for terrorists, adding that he has not received any threatening or warning calls.

In the past, Dogiakos has handled very serious cases, such as the prosecution of senior figures in Golden Dawn, while he has been twice elected head of the Appeals Court prosecution department.
