Bad weather throughout Greece brings first snow: Problems in eastern Crete of heavy rain




Snow had settled in the mountains of Pilio near Volos and parts of Western Macedonia and Imathia on Saturday, forcing drivers to use snowchains at higher altitudes, as the weather across Greece took a turn for the worse, bringing rain and low temperatures.

Heavy rain caused problems in eastern Crete, where a whirlwind caused extensive damage to four hectares of greenhouse crops in Goudoura, Sitia and quantities of soil were washed down onto the roads. Authorities are on the island are on standby and urged the public to exercise great caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

There were no ferry services to the Ionian islands of Zakynthos and Cephalonia on Saturday due to strong winds reaching 8-9 Beaufort blowing in the area, which led authorities to forbid ship departures from Zakynthos to Kyllini and Poros to Kyllini and vice versa.
