The 12th Annual New York City Greek Film Festival opens on October 18th at Florence Gould Hall

The New York City Greek Film Festival (NYCGRFF), celebrates its 12th edition this year, under the guidance of its newly appointed general and artistic director, Maria Tzobanaki. Faithful to film lovers who have supported the cultural event all these years, the NYCGRFF renews its rendezvous with the audience on Thursday, October 18, 2018 for a five-day cinematic event which will celebrate Greek filmmakers both established and up-and-coming.
Within the context of the NYCGRFF’s goal to promote Greek culture internationally, as well as its plan to expand its activities as of 2019 and provide Greek filmmakers with opportunities for global collaborations through a meeting platform, Mrs. Tzobanaki has put together a selection of 25 films, features, documentaries and shorts, that will be screened on a rolling schedule from October 18 to October 22 at the Florence Gould Hall Theater and Le Skyroom, in the heart of NYC.
The opening event will take place on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Florence Gould Hall, with the screening of Tassos Boulmetis’ acclaimed “1968”, a unique blend of fiction and documentary based on the emblematic basketball match between AEK and Slavia, Prague for the European championship in Athens that year.
The NYCGRFF will close on Tuesday, October 23, and will be dedicated to the celebrated Greek actor Giorgos Kimoulis. Following the awards ceremony, where Audience Awards will be presented both to feature and short film winners, the festival will honor Mr. Kimoulis for his contribution to the Greek arts over the years.
During the Festival the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy many gems from the recent Greek film production and to indulge in the biting satire of Nikos Perakis’ “Success Story”, a modern tale of love and betrayal; to witness the first Greek martial arts film with Aliki Danezi-Knutsen’s “Chinatown: The Three Shelters”; to “travel” to the mountains of Arcadia (Stelios Haralambopoulos’ “My Homeland’s Flag Is Blue…”), the temples of Santorini (Zaharias Mavroeidis’ “Across Her Body”), the fields of refugee-ridden Lesbos (Lucas Paleokrassas’ “Citizen Xenos”); to discover chapters from Greece’s tumultuous history with Matthaios Frantzeskakis & Vicky Arvelaki’s “Flowers Fade Early: Kakopetros, August 28, 1944” and Grigoris Vardarinos’ “The Great Fire of Salonica: Birth of a City”; to get to know the late, great musician Nikos Papazoglou through Mihalis Aristidou & Ioannis Grigoropoulos’ “Me and My Shadow”; to meet the distinguished Greek-American intellectual Dan Georgakas in a special tribute that comes with the screening of Mihalis Cacoyannis’ memorable “A Girl In Black” (1956); and to take delight in exciting, moving, multi-awarded short stories –from the hilarious mockumentary “Cowboy”, the sharp thriller “Heimlich” and the suspenseful social portrait “The Ticket” to the heartwarming female-driven dramas “Ourania”, “Hearts For Dinner” or “Meltemi”.
