Strong earthquake jolts Zakynthos, Ionian islands: Only material damages have been reported




A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale was recorded at 01:54 on Friday in the sea region of the island of Zakynthos. According to the Geodynamic Institute of the Athens Observatory the quake’s epicentre was 44 km south-southwest of Zakynthos.

Damages in the port infrastructures, to old houses and minor damages to stores and houses all over the island were reported. However, the castle-monastery of Aghios Dionyssios, a byzantine monument of the 13th century AD on the island of Strofades (27 nautical miles south of Zakynthos) collapsed.

The quake was felt in all the islands of the Ionian Sea, in western Greece and in Athens, in south Italy, on Malta and in Libya.

The electricity was interrupted for a couple of hours on the island and according to Zakynthos mayor Pavlos Kolokotsas’ decision all schools on the island will remain closed on Friday.
