“To reap the fruits of our efforts of the past 3.5 years we should stay united”, says Alexis Tsipras

The government has to remain united at this time when it can reap the fruits of its efforts of the past 3.5 years, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said while addressing a meeting of his cabinet ministers on Tuesday, pointing out that Greece’s economy had now entered a post-programme recovery phase.

According to government sources, Tsipras noted that, for the first time, the Greek government has submitted a draft budget to the European Commission that confirms the country’s clean exit from memorandum supervision.

He underlined that the government’s intentions are reflected in the draft budget and include:

– No implementation of the pension cuts legislated to start in 2019, as the 3.5 pct primary surplus target can be met without them.
– Implementation of the controlled fiscal expansion measures announced at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) in September.

He also expressed his belief that the Greek government’s draft budget will be approved by the European Commission.
According to the same sources, the prime minister placed priority on the start of procedures in early November to review the Constitution, on the basis of the July 2016 proposals and the results of national dialogue.

He called on the ministers to pledge that they have neither considered nor would ever identify with the efforts of the Right and the extreme right to overthrow the government, using the FYROM name issue as a pretext when their real reason was “their wish to reverse the country exit from the crisis with society still standing,” and also that they will not support any motion of censure tabled by New Democracy (ND) against the government.
