Menendez is the guy the Greek-American Community cannot afford to lose in this election: Vote for him

Piscataway, NJ.- Greek News Online

The New Jersey senatorial race is one of the most important in the upcoming November 6 elections, with the incumbent Senator Bob Menendez to face Republican Bob Hugin, a multimillionaire who has spent over 30 million dollars, versus 12 million for the Democratic candidate.

The latest polls show Menendez ahead by 7 percentage points, but this is within the margin of error (5%), The Democratic Party is spending money into Menendez’s campaign for the battle of the airwaves that is taking place the last days of the campaign.

Menendez keeps a close relationship with Greek American Community and he is declared “the Champion of the Hellenic Issues”, whether is Cyprus, Macedonia, the Aegean or the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He is the ranking members of Senate’s Foreign Relations, a position that allows him to play a crucial role in major foreign policy appointments and in promoting crucial foreign policy legislation.

On Sunday, October 21, Tasos Zambas and his wife Sharon Landgraf organized a fundraising event for Senator Menendez, at their home in Piscataway, New Jersey. The event was attended by Senator Menendez and many prominent members of the Greek American Community.

The host Tasos Zambas spoke about his acquaintance with the Senator, when he was Union City mayor and the close friendship they bonded when he became a member of U.S. Congress, in 1993. Two years later, the two of them crossed the Greeen Line in Cyprus to visit Zambas’ home in the occupied Morphou. It was the first time Tasos have seen his home since they left in 1974, following the Turkish invasion.

“He made my dream come true”, Zambas told the audience.

“He is the champion of our issues that we love dearly, whether is Cyprus, Greece, the Aegean, or the Ecumenical Patriarchate. He is the guy the Community cannot afford to lose in this election”.

Tasos Zambas revealed what former Senator Paul Sarbanes had told him when he announced his retirement and the Greek Americans were concerned about who would be the leader in promoting our issues at the Capitol Hill.

“He told us, make sure you elect Senator Bob Menendez”.

Zambas also reminded the audience of the many things Menendez has done for his home state, including the health insurance issues.

“There over 3 million people in New Jersey with pre-existing medical conditions”, Zambas added.

“You may not agree with him on everything he does, but he really believes in what he does. The Greek American Community has to stand behind him. He is one of us, a son of immigrants from Cuba. He lives the American dream like all of us and he understands what all is about.”

Panos Stavrianidis thanked Tasos Zambas for organizing the event and asked all Greek Americans to support Senator Menendez.

“We are looking forward to celebrate your victory”, he told the Senator.

Menendez thanked the organizers and everyone attended the event and spoke about his support for Cyprus, Greece and the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

“I need your support in order to continue to be there”, Senator Menendez said.

“There is no way to match the over 25 million dollars he has already spent and millions to come in the next 15 days. … But at the end of the day I expect we will win this race. Polls are showing us ahead double digits, but most importantly, it’s the people who want a different course for our country, than the present one.”

Menendez renewed his promise to the Greek Americans that he will continue fighting for human rights in Cyprus and everywhere in the world”, as well as the rights of the people of New Jersey.

“This election is about where we are going in our future”, he said.

PHILIP CHRISTOPHER’s APPEAL

Recently, the President of the International Coordinating Committee “Justice for Cyprus” (PSEKA) Philip Christopher made an appeal to all Greek Americans, asking them to make sure that Menendez gets re-elected.

“I’d hate to wake up on Wednesday, November 7th and realize that Senator Robert Menendez lost the election! I keep having a nightmare that our friend and champion for Cyprus, Greece and the Patriarchate lost the election because we, as Greek Americans, did not do enough to help him win this critical race.

Senator Bob Menendez is without question, the most valuable asset of the Greek American community. Losing Bob from the Foreign Relations Committee and his articulate voice from the Senate, would simply be a national disaster!

I hope all organizations and all Greek Americans realize that regardless of our political views, we have an obligation to mobilize and bring united collective action on behalf of Senator Menendez. Whether you are a Republican, Democrat, Conservative or Liberal, we must support and keep Bob in the Senate. Our community needs Senator Menendez who has become our voice for Greek national issues.

I urge all New Jersey residents to take this election seriously and go to the voting booths on Tuesday. The secret of the Greek American community is “Philotimo” and during a crisis, we remember our friends and sacrifice for the common good. Those of us who remember how we felt the day after Congressman Brademas lost must make sure we never experience such a defeat again.

The work goes on,

The hope endures and

The dream of a free and united Cyprus will never die!

Vote for Menendez!

Philip Christopher”
