The government’s goal is to avoid pension cuts, says Digital policy minister Nikos Pappas

The government’s goal is to avoid pension cuts, Minister For Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media Nikos Pappas said on Wednesday in an interview with the public broadcaster ERT.

He said the government will be able to achieve this goal, while implementation of positive measures will achieve the goal of not reducing the tax-free allowance.

Regarding the level of lending rates, the minister said that they remained at relatively low levels following the social policy measures announced by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Thessaloniki. The 4 pct interest rate is close to the interest rate at which Greece borrowed funds some years before the crisis, he said.

Asked about the possibility of early elections, Pappas said that the elections will be held as scheduled, but expressed his opposition to the polarised climate, noting that “the confrontation should over policies.”

Regarding (junior coalition government partner Panos) Kammenos’ stance towards the FYROM issue, Pappas acknowledged that “it is a real problem,” but expressed his optimism that Kammenos will be convinced and will consent to the ratification of the Prespes Agreement.
