PM Alexis Tsipras briefed on plans for 61 urgent demolitions in meeting with Energy Minister

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Friday had a meeting with Environment and Energy Minister George Stathakis, who briefed him on the action underway to remove illegal structures that were a hazard to public safety, starting with 61 demolitions approved in the Attica region.
According to a press release from the PM’s office, the demolitions would take place by extending existing contracts made by local government administrations, a possibility enabled by new legislation.
The announcement said that notifications will be posted and demolition initiated for 27 illegal buildings in Mandra that had been built in the path of watercourses, 21 walls and fences blocking access to beaches in the Saronikos, Anavyssos and Porto Rafti areas and 13 residences built in reforestation zones in Kapandriti, Lavrio and Penteli that had already been handed over to the authorities for demolition by their owners.
The press release also noted that the environment ministry is closely examining court decisions relating to the Mati property where 27 people died when they became trapped as they sought to escape the deadly fires on July 23. The aim is to speed up procedures for any intervention that must be carried out there, in light of the new laws on tackling unauthorised construction.
“The process of demolishing illegal buildings will continue swiftly over the coming period, with priority given to the demolition of 200 to 300 illegal structures judged dangerous to public safety,” the announcement concluded.
