ND leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis visits fire-fighting aircraft unit in Elefsina air base, meets pilots

Visiting the Elefsina air base used by Greece’s Canadair fire-fighting aircraft on Wednesday, main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke with and thanked the aircraft handlers and staff for their ongoing efforts in the fight against fires.

Mitsotakis first met the commander, Brigadier Kyriakos Panagiotopoulos, and then visited the 355 Tactical Transport Squadron and spoke with the pilots of the CL-415 and CL-215 fire-fighting aircraft that took part in the recent operations against the wildfires in Kineta and Penteli.

He then spoke with the aircraft mechanics, who explained how they operate and told him about shortages that have arisen, meaning that some of the aircraft are unable to fly.

Talking to pilots and other personnel, Mitsotakis said that the repair and maintenance of Greece’s airplanes to ensure both the safety of handlers and operational readiness was a top priority. He noted that the recent fires in Attica were a national tragedy that must never be repeated.
