European Commissioner Juncker “happy about the release” of Greek servicemen

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker expressed his satisfaction and joy at the release from a Turkish jail of two Greek servicemen, in a letter released by the mayor of Orestiada Vassilis Mavridis.

As an honorary citizen of Orestiada, Juncker referred in the letter to the mayor his personal interest and continuing support for the return of the two men, who had been held in jail in Edirne since May pending trial for trespassing into Turkish territory.
Among other things, Juncker reiterated that Turkey can only win from its strategic association with the EU and good neighboring relations, and has nothing to fear in its European neighbors.
The EU official expressed the hope that Orestiada, at the edge of the Greek territory and European borders, will continue to serve as a bridge of friendship and collaboration between the two peoples and with the EU.
In his response, Mavridis praised Juncker for his “subtle and expert handling that led to the happy result” of the release, adding that “it is a generally accepted fact that your contribution was timely and decisive,” and inviting Juncker to visit the city.
