The Parliament of FYROM approves the name change deal with Greece for a second time

The parliament in FYROM on Thursday passed for a second time the law ratifying the Prespes Lake agreement with Greece on the name issue, according to official news agency MIA.

The bill passed with 69 votes in favor and one abstention, while the opposition refused to attend, MIA said.

The draft bill had first been voted by parliament on June 20. FYROM President Gjorge Ivanov did not endorse it, necessitating a second round of voting in parliament.

According to MIA, FYROM Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov said that the president is obliged by law to sign the decree after the second parliamentary vote.

“Since the country’s independence, parliament has ratified 897 international agreements, of which only five have been concluded by the president,” Dimitrov is quoted by the agency as saying.

MIA adds that Parliament Speaker Talat Xhaferi announced last week that the law could be sent for publication to the Official Gazette with only his signature, alongside the Law on the Use of Languages, which Ivanov has also failed to sign.
